12/1/2008Scripture and Plain Reason

Scripture isn't antithetical to sound, rational wisdom, though many today imagine otherwise. Reason is no substitute for Scripture, of course, but when good reason and sound logic are kept subject to the authority of Scripture, they are in no way a threat to the truth. On the contrary, the application of sound, logical thinking to the truth of Scripture is a key aspect of the formula for discernment.

11/28/2008A Scriptural Critique of Infant Baptism

A couple of weeks ago I gave a message on the issue of baptism and when I introduced that I was going to do that I said that I wanted to give a follow up message on the issue of infant baptism and I'm going to do that this morning.

Now I confess that this may seem more like a theological class lecture. You may feel like you've just enrolled at the Master Seminary. That's okay, and I warn you in the back rows there who maybe tend to wander anyway because you're so far away, hang in there. This is really a provocative and important and far-reaching issue to deal with...

11/27/2008Giving Thanks to the Father

Giving thanks is too often demoted to a secondary place in the prayers of Christ's people. Our attitude in approaching God is often reminiscent of the leech’s daughters: "Give, Give" (Prov. 30:15). We are quick to make our requests and slow to thank God for His answers. Because God so often answers our prayers, we come to expect it. We forget that it is only by His grace that we receive anything from Him. The Bible repeatedly stresses the importance of giving thanks. "Offer to God a sacrifice of thanksgiving" (Ps. 50:14)...

11/25/2008What does the Bible teach about interracial marriages?

Here's the short answer: nothing in the New Testament prohibits interracial marriage. Christians are at liberty to marry whomever they wish--as long as the other person is also a Christian (1 Corinthians 7:39).

The Old Testament contained some restrictions on whom the Israelites could marry. These were meant to protect the people of God from pagan influences (Deut. 7:3-4) and to guard the purity of the Aaronic priesthood (Lev. 21:13-14). There were even some strict regulations about inter-tribal marriage, designed to keep the various tribes' inheritance from being lost by intermarriage (Num. 36:3-9). However, all such restrictions are explicitly annulled by the New Testament (Gal. 3:27-29).

11/24/2008Psalms for the Anxious

Circumstances are dragging me down. I feel unsettled, worried, anxious. Can you point me to places in Scripture where I can find comfort?

The Bible not only instructs us how to think; it also informs our emotions and helps us gain a comforting perspective. And of all of the books in the Bible, the book of Psalms is perfectly suited for times of trouble. In the Psalms you can identify with the psalmist as he expresses his deepest distress, and learn along with him as God teaches him how to view things from His perspective. Viewing things from God's vantage point--that is true comfort.

May you find comfort as you read these "psalms for the anxious," excerpted from John MacArthur's book Anxious for Nothing...

11/21/2008Do those in heaven know what is happening on earth?

Scripture is silent on the awareness of the Christian upon death. Second Corinthians 5:1-3 tells us about being clothed with our heavenly habitation, which will release us from the burdens of mortality. Verse 8 provides us with a particularly heavenly perspective: "To be absent from the body [is] to be present with the Lord."

Luke 16 speaks of the rich man asking someone to go to his family to...
